Greek Matriarch

This painting was based on my drawings from life of a diminutive, elderly Greek woman who owns the room we rent when we visit Kalymnos Island.
I was delighted when she agreed to sit for me - note her sweet indulgent smile!
The chair seemed too big for her. Her bare feet, tucked primly beneath, hardly touched the floor. I loved how her suprisingly coloured bra strap was revealed when the sober dress slipped off her shoulder. I chose to emphasise the colour as it became symbolic of how I experienced her - a woman of passion and love of life beneath an orthodox exterior of widowhood.
