I like to stand in the sun to observe and create my sculptures, and express my feelings with delicate changes in light and shadow. I usually invite some people to participate in my creation as models. Each of my sculpture figures is not imagined out of thin air, but a friend, family member or stranger around me. I hope to use the technique of elephants to extract the feelings I want to express through mud, sunlight and models and let the bystanders feel a emotion. My inspiration usually comes from these models themselves. I will extract and amplify their emotions at a certain moment, or the innate temperament through their feelings when they get along with them.

Oil on Canvas
h: 41 w: 31 d: 4 (cms).
Like many during lockdown, it was the little everyday things that began to erode my sense of self.
And like many artists, the pandemic hit hard with the loss of scheduled work, planned exhibitions and opportunities I'd spent months working towards. A more personal loss saw me home alone for the first weeks but I was grateful to have my art practice to sustain me.
Eventually I found a new rhythym, new routines and new ideas but I absolutely cursed the fact I coudn't get a hair cut. It sounds trivial. I'm not one to subscribe to 'bad hair days' – short hair is generally a tame beast! But, with the loss of so many things I saw as core to my identity, I didn't want to see that reflected in the neglected spectre staring back from the mirror.
This self-portrait shows my usually smart short locks pinned up with laundry pegs in protest against the heatwave. It was a bit of fun at the time but there is also sadness, a longing to return to 'normal' times when hope and order might be restored.

Touched: Snip Snap by Helen Stone
Touched: Snip Snap by Helen Stone

By Helen Stone
Oil on Canvas
h: 30 w: 25 d: 2 (cms).
My series, Touched, focuses on broken objects, their relationship to their owners and how we might respond as viewers. Is there an urge to touch, a need to fix or an empathetic desire to console – and, if so, what does that tell us about our own interactions with the inanimate world and our own experiences of loss?
Our ability to use tools aided our rise, while artefacts left behind inform us of who we have been. Objects can be our talismans, our armory, our friends and we may mourn them when they are gone.
How will this play out in the future as our world becomes increasingly virtual, leaving the material behind? With the rise of AI, is it possible that we may be among the last to forge invested relationships with objects at all?
This painting is of the trusty scissors of textile designer Eleanor Pritchard, lost in the line of duty.

Acrylic on canvas
h: 60 w: 50 d: 3 (cms).
My current practice examines themes of loss, rebirth and the reverence of nature. The escape from the prosaic into the transcendent through the metamorphosis of self, and the tension between the mundanity of the domestic and the atavistic call of the wild.
Working form the perspective of a woman going through the changes commensurate with my years, I am drawn to the words of Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 'The Yellow Wallpaper' and Barbara Newhall Follett in 'The House Without Windows': the yearning for an escape from the tacitly agreed upon comfort we call a house, and 'normal' life.
By employing the symbols of femininity and domesticity juxtaposed with the natural world, it is my intent to create a narrative that expresses the desire for a simpler way to realise our potential for nurturing and healing.
This series of self-portraits examines these themes and my connections with the habitat I have claimed as my own.

This triptych comprising of three bronze pieces: Minnie-Mized, Deleted Rewritten, Morph relates to our most formative stage of development, childhood. It points to the fragility of identity within childhood when our experiences have maximum affect upon who we become as an adult.
Sometimes exteriors do not reflect accurately the truth of their interiors.
It alludes to a life spent balancing on a knives edge, uncertainty being a constant.
Structures & motifs are incorporated that interact to form narratives which develop as the spectator interacts with the work.
They share the same space so they can interact by creating a dialogue between them & the spectator as individual narratives add & subtract from each other.

coloured pencils on paper
h: 55 w: 75 (cms).
This drawing is a attempt to depict our new and strange times as my daugther sits waiting for what life has in store in our new normal. The Lockdown has helped me to re-evaluate the importance of the people I love and during this time I have been remembering, recording and celebrating the small and seemingly insignificant actions we perform everyday, like sitting on the sofa and waiting for something to happen. These months I have been thinking about my artistic practice and my motivations to create art and this has confirmed my intent to represent women in their moments of strength as well as of weakness and doubt. The use of coloured pencils is a deliberate act to use this domestic medium to reflect the domesticity of the setting and also to indulge in the brilliancy of the dry pigments.

Whilst painting 'Shelter', I was reflecting on how we instinctively seek sanctuary with those we love during moments of sadness and loss - the broken egg shell, representing our fragility, is in contrast to the one sitting intact and protected within the dish.

I love the street art that adorns the walls of places like Shoreditch in London. I know it's not to everyone's liking but I find a lot of it is quite beautiful. I visited a gallery in the area some years ago and found the work somewhat bland. The blandness was emphasised all the more when I entered the street and was confronted by an explosion of colour and vivid images all around. This was my first real introduction to street art. In some places, such as Dalston in Hackney, there are gallery owned walls where grafitti artists can legally show their work. It was during a trip to Brick Lane, specifically to see the street art, that I captured this image of a like minded individual enjoying the work as he passed by. I knew immediately that it was an image I would like to recreate but in my own way. I have ramped up the colours in my painting to emphasise the heat of the day and to enhance the overall image. I particularly enjoyed the combination of the terracota colour bricks and the vibrant pink of the written grafitti and I think they work well together. By using a combination of watercolour and pens I've tried to convey the beauty of the inner city.

French Fancy by Becki Flack

oil on canvas
h: 51 w: 41 d: 4 (cms).
The Protagonist of all Becki's oil paintings is Tita Petita Chihuahua. Tita becomes characters in an entire Other Surreal World, that she has created for her. She often portrays or pays tribute to Famous Women, and in this piece is Marie Antoinette. The World of Tita is so complete, that Becki made her dress and wig for her to wear. This is part of her creative process. Then she photographed her and painted from several of the photos. Tita doesn't mind wearing the clothes and offers the left paw first to go in the clothes, and then the right. Becki created the background by sourcing the props as if for a play or film, to give as much authencity as possible. This is the way she generally works now for her paintings.
Marie Antoinette never said, "Let them eat cake!" which is a phrase associated with her and Becki was under the misapprehension that she did. She was also under the impression that French Fancy cakes were from France,. They were infact created in the UK in the1960s by Rank Hovis McDougall, and then marketed in 1967 as Mr Kipling's (a ficticious character) exceedingly good cakes! Becki ate them as a child growing up in the 70's & 80's. They featured in the photos and then the painting, as they were small Tita sized cakes. The Title 'French Fancy' refes to the cake as well as the fantasy of Tita being Marie Antoinette.

I walked through Trafalgar Square early one morning on my way to The Mall Galleries. It had just stopped raining and the colours and reflections in the pavement were subtle and harmonious. I took several photographs.
I drew the outline in pencil, then the details, also in pencil and finally added the watercolour washes.

Acrylics, Paper Collage

'Parting' is the biggest mixed media piece in the ongoing series 'Hiraeth' in which the artist strives to process the feeling of nostalgia. Hiraeth – a word that at once signifies homesickness, nostalgia, and a grief caused by the yearning for a place you can no longer return to has become the spirit of a world forever changed. Due to recent events our past lives have become a place to which we can never return; a place whose beauty only lives in our memory.
The painting creates a dialogue with the viewer. The attention of the characters is clearly focused on the specatator, giving us the impression that the one looking at the paiting is the one that's 'parting', leaving dear friends and peaceful lands once called home behind.
The artist has chosen to incorporate elements of paper collage intertwined with traditional painting. The faces of the characters are sourced from portraits by Italian Mannerist painter Agnolo Bronzino supplemented with elements from other historic works. By cooperating with painters through time the artist is searching answers to questions - are memories best left untouched, a perfect record of the past? Or are they something to be part of our present?

The lockdown was a difficult period for everybody. My husband and I saw very few people at the time and ventured out little. We missed seeing our grown up children and our grandchildren very much. We were aware of a sense of isolation during this time but also a new appreciation of our relationship to each other.
