Peach with strawberries by Janette Summerfield

Pastel
h: 37 w: 43 d: 2 (cms).
Again, this work is based around reflections, from the the distorted images seen in the stainless steel jug to the 'strawberry colour' on the knife. The knife 'cuts' a dramatic diagonal across the drawing, which is echoed in the diagonal created by the change of background colour. Colour and composition are heightened by the cropping the image, rather like a photograph or graphic. Lockdown was the catalyst for experimenting.

oil on Canvas
h: 106 w: 76 d: 6 (cms).
This painting is my attempt to process the enormity the past six months. Being confined to the house with life on hold, listening daily to the rising death counts and the suffering of many was awful. I wanted to capture the heaviness of this time, and yet the relative normalness of it all. We still slept, ate, watched Netflix and cared for our children, seemingly while the whole world burned. The space above the painting weighs down on the figure while her newspaper hat symbolises the daily grief we faced as the news flooded in.

Fabriano Paper, Pencil, Watercolour, Carbon Paper
h: 87 w: 68 d: 3 (cms).
Watercolour on Fabriano Paper, float mounted in a box frame.
A 140 miniature, watercolour studies with expressive mark-making through carbon paper. This work takes you on a journey with your eye darting from chapter to chapter. The simple line giving the viewer just a hint of the journey.
I was going to tell you where my journey is but actually I think it’s more interesting for you to work it out…. I’m dyslexic so hate writing descriptions about my work. Here's a quote that was said about this painting and sums up what i'm trying to say perfectly - “Beautiful. I love the economic use of line and colour to say so much. It is beautifully calm and unfussy” - Steve Geliot

Recent years have seen ever-increasing numbers of people forced to leave their homelands, whether through war or famine, hardship or persecution; their images flicker across our television screens and populate our newspapers and social media. The numbers of people who have been displaced is overwhelming and difficult to comprehend. This piece is part of a series of drawings on the theme of refugees, those people who have been uprooted from all they know and hold dear.

The study has been taken from the inside of the Man Mo Taoist temple in Hong Kong. I wanted to capture the smoky atmosphere of the incense, spiralling smoke and almost smelling the perfume of the incense itself. The interior was fairly dim except for a small amount of natural light from above. I have used some of the ash from the incense sticks I purchased at the temple to create some of the drawing to bring that sense of connection and place.

I painted this image as part of the PortraitsforNHSHeroes project which was launched during lockdown as a means for artists to say thank you to NHS workers. The portrait is of Adam Jenkins, who works with paramedics in Penzance for the South West Ambulance Service. I loved the reflection in the face shield and the fact that you could only see one eye. There was such an intense look in the eye which showed the strain of working long hours in the fight against Covid 19. The light behind his heads represents a glimmer of hope for the future of the pandemic.

My work reflects my obsession with drawing and painting the human figure and my fascination with observing and describing people in their natural environment. It was the greatest joy to finally return to the beach as lockdown began to ease... there is no greater playground for life drawing; figures of all shapes and size, families and friendship groups in joyful and uninhibited play, and whilst I draw and paint individuals, the compositional arrangement forms a pattern, narratives emerge and the individuals form a whole.

Sand cast glass with copper on slate
h: 18 w: 23 d: 6 (cms).
This piece endeavours to show our connections with the earth but also with the sky and the heavens: Our faces turn upwards away from the war torn fields, as we still long for hope and that all will be well.
I often use the sand cast technique as it's not so precise and it's a partnership with the glass, creating amazing alchemic surprises. The glass is poured at @ 1100 degrees C, like liquid honey, into a crude sand mould, with copper wire and nails placed in between the layers. This in itself creates a rawness about the piece, as though it has lain in the earth, undiscovered, for centuries.

Tempera, glair, natural earth pigments, mixed media
Part of a series of contemporary, abstract, landscape paintings created during a winter residency in Ireland. I was inspired by the fierce and wild Atlantic storms, the rugged, barren coastal landscape, and the ever changing magical silver light of the Iveragh Peninsual. Using indigenous natural materials where possible e.g gathering peat ash from the stove, slate dust from a local quarry, ground earth pigments from the rocks etc., mixed with tempera, glair and mixed media, in order to capture the natural colours of the dramatic, winter, coastal landscape in my paintings.

This is a large painting worked up from a series of smaller pieces on panel and paper. It's based on a series of work looking at forgotten places. I have been accessing buildings which are lying empty waiting for demolition and ultimately redevelopment. I find these moments of quiet very moving.

The Three Treasures or Three Jewels are basic virtues in Taoism and Chinese Buddhism.
The artist has recreated The Three Treasures in the form of jewel-like eggs. The work, constructed in bronze and precious metals, is hand painted and finished as a naturalistic representation in acrylic oil, with interwoven cotton, and natural elements.
The work examines human perception, belief and expectation.
Eggs recreated from the genus of the distinctive, Song Thrush. (Turdus philomelos)
