Though I am not the model in this painting, I consider it to be a self portrait. Much of my work explores the idea of self and of identity. The model is usually portrayed in heavy make-up which to me has come to represent both a physical mask and a metaphorical one, alluding to the illusions we often portray of ourselves. This painting is evocative for me of a memory and is a reminder of the power of words and their ability to slice us to the core.
