This piece is from a series of paintings I am doing from a ruined village and farm in East Lothian, Peaston Farm. Fallen Roof captures the roof of a workers cottage not long after it started to fall in. The structure, having collapsed, created wonderful new shapes and the light coming in through the tattered remains highlighted beams here and there giving mystery and depth to the scene.

Derelict Farmhouse, Ullapool

High on a hill outside the Scottish, West Coast village of Ullapool stands a derelict farmhouse with the most amazing views. Sadly, now abandoned, it has fallen into disrepair. When I saw it I knew it had to join my other paintings of derelict and abandoned buildings before it disappeared for ever. The roof is almost completely gone on one side creating a magificent series of light and shadow in the dark remnants of this one time busy farmhouse. In my paintings I like to develop a sense of the footprint of man by clearly, defined areas of his handywork disintegrating and disappearing back into the land. In this piece there was also the interst of being able to look up to the sky through the building as the first floor had also collapsed.

Peaston Cottage Window

Acrylic

h: 46 w: 61 d: 1 (cms).

This painting comes from a derelict, farm workers cottage in the village of Peaston in East Lothian, Scotland. This cottage was standing empty for many years and over that period sadly fell into dilapitation. This glasses window stood open, inside were the fallen timbers of the roof and ceiling. Through the remains of the roof came shafts of light into the otherwise deep darkness, the brilliance of which, made objects appear and disappear as the sun came and went behind cloud. Windows are usually for looking out but here I was looking in and considering what had  once been. I wanted to capture the moment before it was gone for ever.
